A Certain Slant of Sunlight is Will Yackulic’s first solo exhibition with pt.2 Gallery. The works move between interiors, streets, trees, and still lifes throughout the Bay Area. Painted in oil on small wood panels, the paintings hold ordinary scenes in close focus, where changing light and sustained attention allow familiar places to gradually shift into something less certain.

Unexpected relationships and a slight strangeness begin to emerge within otherwise everyday scenes. Branches and netting begin to mirror one another. Light passing through glass alters nearby objects. Forms flatten into a pattern before returning to depth again. Echoes and correspondences emerge across the works, offering moments of recognition that feel intimate and slightly elusive.
Many of the works were developed in the hours between daily responsibilities. Parenthood changed the rhythm of Yackulic’s practice and the amount of time available to paint, bringing a different kind of attention to fleeting observations. Most of the paintings were completed in just a few sittings, allowing the surfaces to remain open and responsive, retaining the immediacy of passing observation.
The exhibition also includes a Super 8 film composed of footage from travels through Europe with family and friends, intercut with scenes from Yackulic’s final months in New York before moving to Sheffield, England. Though filmed decades earlier, the work reveals a longstanding interest in framing light, movement, architecture, and everyday scenes across both painting and moving image.

The title, A Certain Slant of Sunlight, references both Emily Dickinson and a variation by poet Ted Berrigan, Yackulic’s late uncle. Berrigan’s poetry of ephemeral and tragicomic daily life deeply influenced the artist’s sensibility and early understanding of art as something inseparable from everyday experience.
Yackulic has exhibited at Berkeley Art Museum, Art in General, Industry City, and Crocker Art Museum. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Flash Art, Art on Paper, Le Monde, Time Out London, Village Voice, The Philadelphia Inquirer, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and Los Angeles Times. His work is held in the permanent collections of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Berkeley Art Museum, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, amongst others. Yackulic currently lives and works in Berkeley, California.
