pt.2 Gallery is pleased to present Myriad, a new body of paintings by Oakland-based artist Shannon Rogers. Building on his ongoing investigation of geometric abstraction, Rogers turns more directly toward landscape, creating expansive, intricately constructed paintings that move between recognizable space and abstraction. Rather than resolving into a single image, the paintings remain open to multiple readings, allowing different spaces and realities to coexist.
The exhibition takes its title from the ancient Greek myrias, meaning ten thousand and, by extension, something countless or innumerable. The title also recalls the “ten thousand things” of Daoist thought, a phrase describing the multiplicity of forms that make up the world. For Rogers, Myriad speaks to interconnectedness and to the possibility that no single perspective can fully account for what we see.
Landscape has long informed Rogers’ work, but in Myriad it becomes increasingly present. The imagined compositions draw from archetypal and romantic visions of landscape, including volcanoes, canyons, ruins, monuments, and expansive sunsets, rather than specific places or source images. Panoramic formats and atmospheric palettes further evoke the conventions of landscape painting, while geometric structures disrupt the illusion of a coherent view. The resulting spaces feel both familiar and invented, landscapes that can be entered visually but never entirely located.

Rogers begins each painting with drawings and schematic studies that establish its spatial and compositional logic. These systems give Rogers both a framework and something to push against. As layers accumulate, he breaks apart his initial structures, allowing intuition and unexpected relationships to guide the work.
Working in oil, Rogers further complicates these spaces through color, surface, and mark-making. Wet-into-wet passages and visible underlayers create dynamic chromatic relationships, while marks across the surface interrupt spatial illusion and return attention to the physical presence of paint. Forms move between volume and flatness; color can suggest atmosphere, light, or terrain before becoming purely chromatic again. These shifts keep the paintings unresolved, giving the eye multiple paths through each composition.
For Rogers, getting lost is integral to both making and viewing a painting. The imagined landscapes of Myriad offer worlds in which the eye and mind can wander, creating spaces for direct visual experience and contemplation. Multiple perspectives and possible realities coexist, reflecting Rogers’ larger interest in painting as a way of thinking about consciousness and our experience of the world.
About the Artist
Shannon Rogers (b. 1984, Little Rock, AR) is an Oakland-based painter and sculptor. He holds an MFA from the New York Studio School and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Rogers’ work has been featured in solo exhibitions including Time Machines at Pt.2 Gallery, Superpositions at Book and Job Gallery (2023), and Lexicon at Hang Art (2019) in San Francisco.
