pt.2 is pleased to present a group show by Ben Quinn, Caleb Hahne, Lena Gustafson, Liz Hernández, Maria Paz, Paige Valentine, Ryan Whelan, and Sam Spano. Much of the work presented in this show addresses place, home, and belonging through quotidian themes; details of the natural world, food, memory, human interaction, daily tasks, and a search for beauty in uncertain times.

Ben Quinn
Ben Quinn (b.1991 Dayton, OH) is an artist living and working in Los Angeles, CA. He received a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design and MFA from California College of the Arts.  Quinn’s work deals mostly with post-psychedelic reflection and sensitivities to the supernatural through painting, sometimes accompanied by image and sound.

Caleb Hahne
Caleb Hahne (b. 1993) is a Denver based artist whose paintings address themes of memory, vulnerability, intimacy and boyhood. His paintings are experienced through the lens of the uncanny. Through storytelling, he reflects on a liminal space, often meeting a memory.

Lena Gustafson
Lena Gustafson (b. San Francisco 1989) is a painter and multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Oakland, CA. Her paintings depict scenes of transformation often with figures or plants merging with their environment. Primary themes in Gustafson's work include body memory, repression, sequential evolution, and reciprocity. She received her BFA from the Art Institute of Boston in 2011.

Liz Hernández
Liz Hernández (b. 1993) is a Mexican artist who works primarily with topics related to her identity. She pulls imagery from her memories of living in Mexico City, focusing on the way the mundane and the extraordinary coalesce. Recently her work has been inspired by the idea that food is a language that we can all understand. She explores food as a way to communicate ideas of immigration, community, and home. Liz lives and works in Oakland, CA.

Maria Paz
Maria Paz (b.1989) is a self- taught Chilean ceramic sculptor living and working in Oakland, California. Her work explores the bond broken with her home country in addition to her experience of being raised as an undocumented immigrant in the United States.

Paige Valentine
Paige Valentine (b. Los Angeles, CA) is an Oakland, CA-based artist who makes paintings and ceramics collaging imagery from her every day life as well as from art history. She received her BFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2018.

Ryan Whelan
Ryan Whelan (b. 1991) strives for contradiction to be present in his work no matter the subject. He looks for something ordinary yet magical, simple but complex, and perfectly imperfect. Lately, he has been finding these kinds of contradictions in nature. Ryan wants these tiny moments to bring up other questions as well. How does the sun feel to plants? What are the quiet conversations between leafs? What is it like to just live?

Sam Spano
Sam Spano (b. 1987)  is a visual artist based in Oakland, California.  Pulling images from real life experiences and a range of photographic source material, Spano creates stylized paintings that are often humorous and romantic, frequently featuring women, men, animals and food. Expressively rendered with a particular focus on bold colors, composition and surface texture, the people in his paintings are often caught in the middle of introspective solitary moments, mundane daily activities, or surreal dream worlds.

pt. 2: is a contemporary art gallery that opened its Oakland location in March of 2018 and its Los Angeles location in October of 2019. We feature monthly exhibitions by emerging and mid-career artists. pt. 2: LA is located at 818 N. Spring Street, #202, near the Chinatown exit of the Metro Gold Line and has open gallery hours Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Opening receptions at pt.2: are always free and open to the public.
