Sun Night Editions & pt.2 Gallery are pleased to present "Aparecida", a hand-embellished print by Liz Hernández set to release at this year's SF Art Book Fair. “Aparecida” takes inspiration from miraculous apparitions or supernatural appearances of virgins, saints, or angels reported by people in their everyday life. These holy images appear in domestic settings, often found in food, household objects, or even nature. They retain a significant following despite the absence of an official determination of approval or inauthenticity.

These visual manifestations are often frowned upon from a theological perspective and religious authorities usually disapproved of them. However, these minor signs are embraced by people who consider these images as tangible miracles and signs of hope. They are an example of how we make sense of our reality and find meaning in the things around us, no matter how mundane they can be.  - Liz Hernández

The creation of “Aparecida” was an experimental process of bending methods and materials used in Hernández’s studio through traditional printmaking techniques. We landed on using the screen-printing process to provide the publication with a richness in tone that revealed itself to be similar to a ceramic glaze firing. The combination of red oxide and yellow ochre pigments was used to create a wash and applied to create a watercolor-like texture that the figure rests on.

The collaboration involved Hernández through every step of the process, from hand painting the films to staining the paper and even portions of the gold leaf application. The hand-drawn elements brought an organic quality to the artwork, bringing the print to life. Every piece across this edition of hand-painted multiples stands as its own unique work. Thank you to Liz Hernández for trusting me throughout the process and thank you to my counterpart Drew Grasso for his assistance with this collaboration. - Yoni Asega

Please note prints are only available in person, one per person, first come, first served.
